Biographical Information[edit]
Outfielder Kendall George was drafted by the Los Angeles Dodgers with the 36th overall pick of the 2023 amateur draft. It was the Dodgers' first opportunity to pick a player in that draft, and it came in Competitive Balance Round A; it was not that the Dodgers were eligible for such a pick, which is normally reserved to low-revenue teams, but it was a result of their top pick, which have been the 26th, being downgraded by ten spots as punishment for their exceeding the luxury tax threshold (the New York Mets suffered a similar fate that year). As for George, he was the second graduate of Atascocita High School in Humble, TX to be selected in the 2023 draft, after #28 pick Brice Matthews, although Matthews had graduated a few years earlier and had gone on to attend the University of Nebraska.
George was considered to have the best speed of any high school player at the time of the draft and led to his being selected well above his projected ranking of #65, according to mlb.com and #114 according to Baseball America; he moved to the first round when other players the Dodgers were looking at were taken earlier than expected by other teams. He was the highest-drafted high school position player by the Dodgers since Gavin Lux in 2016. He gave up a commitment to go to the University of Arkansas in order to sign with L.A.
Kendall had been a member of the USA junior national team at the 2022 U-18 Baseball World Cup. A part-time center fielder for the champs, he hit .364/.556/.636 with 6 walks and 6 steals (in 6 tries) in 8 games. He led the event in steals and tied for 9th in walks. He began his pro career in 2023 with the ACL Dodgers, then was promoted after 16 games to the Rancho Cucamonga Quakes of the California League. Between the two stops, he batted .370 in 28 games. He did not hit quite so much in 2024 but still had a solid full season with Rancho Cucamonga, batting .279/.384/.328 in 86 games. He hit only 1 home run but scored 75 runs and stole 36 bases (he was caught 12 times). In 2025, he moved up to the Great Lakes Loons of the High-A Midwest League, where he hit .295/.409/.370. Obviously, his ability to reach base was his greatest strength, and it led to 93 runs in 111 games. He also displayed outstanding speed with 100 stolen bases while being caught 24 times. In contrast, he hit just 19 extra-base hits - 9 doubles, 7 triples and 3 homers - and drove in 34 runs. He thus did not have the production of a typical outfielder, but his profile was one that could be very valuable in the majors if he could reproduce his numbers at higher levels. He was the Midwest League Player of the Month for August and was named a post-season All-Star.
Interestingly, there was a minor league 1B/OF named George Kendall who played in 1951 and 1952, in the Brooklyn Dodgers organization.
