Kai McKinstry played in the Bundesliga and for the German national team.
He was 3-1 with a 2.96 ERA for the 1996 Mainz Athletics and was 4-for-14 with a walk, two triples, three runs and four RBI at the plate. He went 5-1 with a save and a 3.57 ERA the next year (0 for 2 on offense). He was 10th in the Bundesliga-1 South in K (45), tied for 7th in wins and 10th in IP (40 1/3). He had a 8.10 ERA in two games in the 1997 European Championship. He had a 6-4, 4.18 record for the 1998 Athletics and did not bat. He trailed only Stephen McCarty and Dirk Günther in ERA, was 6th in strikeouts (66), ranked 4th in innings (84) and was 4th in WHIP (1.62) in the aluminum-bat league. In '99, he improved to 5-1 with a save and a 1.94 ERA, going 0 for 2. He won the ERA title (.37 ahead of Günther), was 9th with 48 strikeouts, tied for 5th in wins and was again 4th in WHIP (1.37, between Jan Rüssel and Klaus Knüttel). He had a 5.06 ERA for Germany in the 1999 European Championship. Overall, he had gone 19-7 with two saves and a 3.40 ERA in 34 regular-season Bundesliga games, striking out 179 in 190 1/3 IP.
