Biographical Information[edit]

Pitcher Justin Campbell was selected by the Cleveland Guardians with the 37th overall pick in Competitive Balance Round A of the 2022 amateur draft. He was coming off three seasons at Oklahoma State University, where he was a combined 17-6, 3.37, and had struck out 141 batters in 101 1/3 innings while walking only 25 in his final season. He was also a designated hitter in college, batting .414 in 13 games in his freshman season in 2020 before the COVID-19 pandemic ended the season, and then .269 in 42 games in 2021. He focused solely on pitching in his final season. Coming out of high school, he had been selected in the 18th round of the 2019 amateur draft by the Houston Astros but had decided to go to college.

His professional debut was delayed by a number of years. He did not pitch again in 2022 after being signed by the Guardians for a reported $1.7 million signing bonus, something that is common for college pitchers coming off a full season of work. In 2023, however, he had to undergo Tommy John surgery in June after being assigned to the ACL Guardians and missed the entire season. While the recovery time for the surgery is normally 12 to 16 months, he definitely fell on the longer end of that scale, as he was not ready to start pitching again when 2024 rolled around, and missed that entire season as well.
