Biographical Information[edit]
Pitcher Julian Garcia was already 31 and a veteran of eight minor league seasons when he made his major league debut with the Cincinnati Reds on June 23, 2026. However, things did not go in true fairy tale fashion for him, as while he did not allow a hit in 1 2/3 innings and struck out three opponents, he walked a pair and one of them crossed the plate with his successor, Caleb Ferguson on the mound, result in the first run of a 2-0 loss to the Milwaukee Brewers that was pinned on his record.
He went to unheralded Metropolitan State University of Denver in Denver, CO before being drafted by the Philadelphia Phillies in the 10th round of the 2016 amateur draft. He pitched in the Phillies system from 2016 to 2022, sitting out the 2020 season when the COVID-19 pandemic shut down the minor leagues, and reaching AAA in 2021. However, his 2022 season did not go well as he was 0-1, 8.86 in 13 games for the AA Reading Fightin Phils. He was released on July 13th and his career appeared over until he decided to play in the independent American Association with the Kansas City Monarchs in 2024. He was 5-1, 2.54 in 22 games, then continued to do well in winter ball with the Senadores de San Juan in the Puerto Rican League, even making it into the 2025 Caribbean Series, where he pitched 6 1/3 innings in relief. Returning to the Monarchs in 2025, he was outstanding, going 9-2, 3.39 in 19 starts and leading the circuit with 163 strikeouts in 111 2/3 innings. That resulted in the Reds signing him on August 26th. He was given 3 starts with the AA Chattanooga Lookouts at the end of the year, going 1-1, 1.13.
In 2026, he started the year in AAA with the Louisville Bats, where he was used as a reliever while getting a couple of spot starts. He was 3-0, 3.03 with 1 save in 21 saves when he was called up to Cincinnati on June 22nd. When he made his debut the next day, he was the first player from his alma mater, MSU-Denver, to make it to the majors.
