Biographical Information[edit]
Josh Topper has been on the Austrian national team.
He was 1-0 with a 3.86 ERA and 15 K in 9 1/3 IP as a college freshman at Pfeiffer then had 3 saves and a 3.18 ERA in the COVID-19-shortened 2020 season. He slipped to 1-2, 6.75 with a save in 2021, striking out 17 but walking 17 and throwing 10 wild pitches in 10 2/3 IP. In '22, he had a 2-2, 9.21 record. Transferring to Milligan, he had a 8.31 ERA in five outings in 2023 and had a 12.27 ERA in six games the next year.
Going to play in Austria, he was 1-1 with 3 saves and a 6.08 ERA for the '24 Vienna MetroStars. He tied for the Bundesliga save lead. [1] He was 1-0 with a 0.90 ERA in the 2024 European Cup, beating Kiyoshi Grisot of the Cougars de Montigny. [2] Holding an Austrian passport, he pitched two shutout innings for Austria in the 2024 European Championship Qualifier as they held on to their spot for the 2025 European Championship. [3]
Topper was 3-4 with a save and a 4.46 ERA for the 2025 Dornbirn Indians, finishing 9th in the Bundesliga with 53 K. [4] In the 2025 European Championship, he debuted against Belgium. Relieving Mathias Albert, he closed out a 16-8 win, striking out Dennis De Quint and Axel Poesmans, walking Nick Vanthillo and getting Yves Poesmans on a grounder. He allowed one run in four innings for the event, including a brief appearance in the 9th/10th place game win over Sweden that gave them their best finish ever (plunking Daniel Johnson and retiring Oskar Jerfsten). He led Austria in games pitched, tying for the 2025 Euros lead. [5]
