Biographical Information[edit]

Josh Smith pitched in the New York Yankees system from 2003 to 2005. Though he briefly reached Triple-A (1 1/3 innings), he never ascended to the majors.

He was drafted by the Yankees three times. Initially, he was taken in the 18th round of the 2000 amateur draft, but opted not to sign. He was next taken by the club in the 18th round of the 2001 amateur draft, but again, opted not to sign. He finally inked a deal after being taken by the Yankees in the 8th round of the 2003 amateur draft, one pick ahead of catcher Matt Pagnozzi.

He began his career that year, going 1-2 with a 4.55 ERA in 11 relief appearances for the Staten Island Yankees. With the Battle Creek Yankees in 2004, he was 5-2 with a 5.42 ERA in 34 games (10 starts). In his final season, 2005, he went 2-1 with a 3.68 ERA in 45 games (1 start) split between the Charleston RiverDogs (34 G, 2.88 ERA), Tampa Yankees (9 G, 7.30 ERA) and Triple-A Columbus Clippers (2 G, 0.00 ERA). In 63 2/3 innings total, he had 65 Ks.

Overall, Smith went 8-5 with a 4.67 ERA in 90 games (11 starts). In 185 innings, he allowed 200 hits and 85 walks (1.541 WHIP), while striking out 167 batters.
