Biographical Information

Shortstop Jose Mateo played in the pro ranks from 1995-2004, mostly in the independent leagues. In his three minor league seasons in the Los Angeles Dodgers (1995-1996) and Atlanta Braves (1998) organizations he hit .196/.290/.229 in 231 games. He played six games with the AAA Richmond Braves in 1998. His offensive numbers in the independent leagues were somewhat better at .235/.327/.280 while appearing in 191 games.

After completing his playing career, Mateo may have coached the DSL Blue Jays in 2012-2013 though this could not be confirmed. He managed the team from 2014-2016 and coached for them in 2017-2019 and 2021-2024. He was slated to coach the DSL Blue Jays in 2020 before COVID-19 shut down the minor league season. He was then a coach for the DSL Blue Jays Red in 2025 and DSL Blue Jays Blue in 2026.

Mateo should not be confused with another Jose Mateo who coached the DSL Padres for a number of years.
