Biographical Information[edit]
Outfielder Jonny Farmelo was drafted by the Seattle Mariners with the 29th overall pick of the 2023 amateur draft as a "Prospect Promotion Incentive Pick". He was the first player ever drafted under that new provision in the draft rule ushered in by the most recent Collective Bargaining Agreement, a provision aiming to incentivize teams not to play games with the service time of top prospects. In this particular case, the Mariners were rewarded with the pick for bringing up top prospect Julio Rodríguez at the start of the previous season, resulting in his winning the 2002 American League Rookie of the Year Award.
Farmelo, who was drafted out of a high school in Virginia, began his professional career in 2024 by playing 46 games with the Modesto Nuts of the Low-A California League, where he hit .264/.398/.421, with 4 homers and 21 RBIs. In 2025, he was promoted to the Everett AquaSox of the High-A Northwest League, but an injury limited him to just 29 games. He hit .230 with 6 homers and 16 RBIs, then after the season was sent to the Arizona Fall League for additional playing time. He appeared in another 23 games, batting .234 with 2 homers and 16 RBIs. The question was now to see what he could do over a full season.
