Biographical Information[edit]
As an undergraduate student, Jonathan Gelnar attended four different colleges. He played baseball at the first two - South Mountain Community College and Redlands Community College. He then transferred to the University of Central Oklahoma before finishing his college career at Southwestern Oklahoma State University in 2012 with a degree in History. In 2015, he also earned a master's degree in Educational Leadership.
The information regarding Gelnar's high school coaching career is rather sparse (as was his college career), so the following is a best guess. Gelnar coached at Union High School in Tulsa, OK from 2013-2016 and at Reedy High School in Frisco, TX from 2017-2019.
In 2020 the Texas Rangers hired Gelnar as a coach for the Frisco RoughRiders before the COVID-19 pandemic caused the minor league season to be cancelled.
Gelnar returned to the high school scene in 2021 as a Social Studies teacher at Owasso High School where he also served as an assistant baseball coach. In the fall of 2022, Gelnar moved to Claremore High School as a U.S. History & Psychology teacher and took over as the head baseball coach for the Zebras. He was named the Oklahoma Region 3 Baseball Coach of the Year in 2025.
Jonathan is the son of former major leaguer John Gelnar.
