Biographical Information

John Self played in the minor leagues and in Nippon Pro Baseball.

Self began his professional career with the St. Louis Cardinals, and he hit .293/.382/.474 with 16 homers for the Billings Mustangs in 1959. He tied Jack Damaska and Charlie Bennett for 8th in the Pioneer League in dingers, He recorded a .287/.369/.488 batting line with the Winnipeg Goldeyes in 1960, and he also went 17-for-57 with the Winston-Salem Red Birds. He was third in the Northern League in home runs (17), trailing only Johnny Lewis and Gil Carter. He was 9th among Cardinals farmhands in circuit clouts. Self then had a 7-for-39 record with the Lancaster Red Roses, and he played 63 games with a .253/.322/.444 batting line for the Eau Claire Braves. He also hit .214/.287/.250 in 23 games for the Des Moines Demons, and he left organized baseball. Self signed with the Taiyo Whales in 1970, but he only batted .234/.254/.406 in 43 games (backing up Kazuhiko Kondo at 1B), and he left the team.

Overall, Self hit .275/.356/.452 with 349 hits and 44 homers in 3 seasons in the minor leagues.
