Biographical Information[edit]

John Petrie was a native of Oneida, NY, who played three years as an outfielder in the minor leagues from 1889 to 1891. After playing with amateur teams in Oneida for several years, the city had a team in the New York State League in 1889. Petrie finished tenth in the league in batting average, hitting .314 in 28 games[1]. In 1890, he joined the Utica Pent-Ups in June and was their regular right fielder for the remainder of the year, again hitting well, with a .273 average[2]. He joined the Lebanon Cedars of the Eastern Association in 1891, but was released in July, after hitting .274 in 56 games. He then returned to Oneida, where he would play locally afterwards. He fell ill in 1897[3] and nevery fully recovered, dying at age 33 in 1900[4].
