Biographical Information[edit]
John Murphy was from West Fitchburg, MA, where he played for local teams in the late 1880s and early 1890s.
He had four known professional stints outside of Fitchburg. In the spring of 1890 he went to Charleston, SC with the New York Giants and remained with the team as it returned to New York. He played 15 pre-season games with the club, mostly in right field, but was released before the regular season began[1]. He then went to Olneyville, RI, where he became the manager and center fielder for the Cadets[2], one of six teams in the 1890 state league. By June 10th, Murphy had transferred to the Albany Senators of the New York State League, where he played center field. After being released by Albany in July, he played back in Fitchburg for the remainder of 1890 and 1891, though was said to be ill during 1891[3]. In 1892, he played with Lewiston, ME in the New England League[4] in April and May[5], which was his final known stint as a player.
