Biographical Information

John Hennegan grew up in Newark, NJ, where he became a renowned young player in the city in the late 1880s. He signed to play with Newark's club in the Atlantic Association in 1890. After getting into only one regular season game he was released due to roster constraints. He then joined Johnstown/Gloversville in the New York State League for the rest of the season, where he hit .300 in 73 games as the team's regular first baseman, and made a reputation as a reliable player and honorable gentleman.

That winter he joined some of his previous teammates in Key West, FL to play in a winter league. While in the south he was struck with rheumatism and was not feeling well at the start of the 1891 season, though he had signed with Albany, NY. He returned home shortly after reporting to Albany and played later in the summer with the Star Athletic Club of Newark, where he would continue to play in the following years. In 1894 he returned to Gloversville to manage and captain an independent team there as its first baseman. After his playing days, he and his brothers, then spelling their name as Henegan, had business success with cafes and a cigar store in Newark.
