Biographical Information[edit]
John Core, whose full name was John Lee Core, was a minor league baseball player and college baseball coach from West Virginia, with a professional career spanning 1906 to 1913. He was the J. L. Core who coached the West Virginia University baseball team in 1910, when the team went 14–11.[1]
Born in Morgantown, WV, Core attended West Virginia University. The 1905 Monticola yearbook lists John L. Core as left tackle on the 1902 football team, fullback on the 1903 team, and pitcher on the baseball teams of 1902, 1903, and 1904.[2] West Virginia's baseball roster database also lists John L. Core on the 1909–10 roster.[3]
In the minor leagues, Core is documented with Wheeling in 1906, Dayton in 1907, the Los Angeles Angels of the Pacific Coast League in 1912, and Grand Rapids in 1913. His best documented season was 1906, when he ranked among the Central League leaders with 168 hits, 25 doubles, and 18 triples for Wheeling.
Core married Eva May Watts on February 24, 1913.[4] He died on December 13, 1943, and was buried in Masonic Cemetery in Shinnston, WV.[5]
