- Born 1869 in Philadelphia, PA USA
- Died April 6, 1920 in San Francisco, CA USA
Biographical Information[edit]
Joe Coyne lived most of his life in Pittsfield, MA, though he was born in Pennsylvania and died in California. He played for some teams around Pittsfield in 1888 and 1889, and spent some time in 1889 playing in the Troy city league[1]. He then opened the 1890 season with Troy in the New York State League[2], serving as the team's regular shortstop into August. After being released by Troy, he moved to the Albany Senators in the same league, and finished the season playing third base for that club[3]. In 1891, Coyne played third base for the Ottawa Modocs in the Illinois-Iowa League, who were managed by Jack Remsen, also manager of Troy in 1890.
Coyne was back in Pittsfield in 1892[4] and played locally for the next several years, including as a representative of the Stanley Electric Works[5]. When Pittsfield fielded a team in the 1894 New York State League, Coyne was the team's captain. In 1895, he went to play with the Harrisburg Senators in the Pennsylvania State League[6], but he was released after playing 9 league games with the club[7]. He then remained in Pittsfield, working for many years as a bartender at the American House. He died in 1920, shortly after moving to San Francisco[8].
