Biographical Information

Outfielder Jason Johnson played in the Philadelphia Phillies system from 1996 to 2002 and for the independent Long Island Ducks from 2003 to 2005. He peaked at Double-A.

He was drafted twice. Initially, he was taken by the Cincinnati Reds in the 21st round of the 1995 amateur draft, one pick after outfielder Mark Budzinski. He didn't sign. He did sign after being taken by the Phillies in the 12th round of the 1996 amateur draft.

He had consistent speed, stealing 20-plus bases each year from 1996 to 2001. He stole 20, 20, 32, 27, 22 and 31 those seasons, respectively, and 19 in his final campaign in the Phillies system. His power output was limited while in their chain, as he hit just 7 home runs in 2,474 at-bats, or one every 353 at-bats. He joined the Ducks in 2003, hitting .305/.333/.415 in 24 games his first year there. He developed a little power stroke in 2004, hitting 11 home runs (and stealing 36 bases) in 100 games, then wrapped up his career with a .281/.340/.413 line in 94 games in 2005.

Overall, Johnson hit .277/.331/.361 with 23 homers, 348 RBI and 223 steals in 869 games over 10 seasons. In the Phillies chain, he hit .275/.326/.341 with 7 homers, 238 RBI and 171 steals and with the Ducks, he hit .282/.348/.427 with 16 home runs, 110 RBI and 52 stolen bases.
