Biographical Information[edit]
OF Jake Meyers is the son of Paul Meyers, who was an outfielder in the minor leagues from 1986-1990. He was a two-way player in college at the University of Nebraska and was drafted in the 13th round of the 2017 amateur draft by the Houston Astros. He was signed by scout Mark Adair.
He reached the majors towards the end of the 2021 season and quickly took over in center field, where Myles Straw and Chas McCormick had failed to claim the starting job. He ended up hitting .260 in 49 games, with 6 homers and 28 RBIs for an OPS+ of 107. He then went 3 for 8 in the Division Series where the Astros defeated the Chicago White Sox, but was injured and did not play again as Houston made it to the World Series. In 2022, he failed to hold on to the centerfield job as he hit just .227 in 52 games, with an OPS+ of 67. As a result, he saw only very limited action in the postseason, going 0 for 2 with a run in Houston's win over the Seattle Mariners in the Division Series, and then not playing in the next two rounds altogether. He won a World Series ring that year, but his contribution to the effort was minimal.
In 2023, he increased his playing time to 112 games with Straw no longer in the picture, but he continued to disappoint with the bat, again hitting .227, with 10 homers and 33 RBIs, his OPS+ rising slightly, to 86. He was listed as the team's starting center fielder, but he continued to share the position with McCormick, who also saw action in left field, and by the time the postseason rolled around, he was back on the bench and did not see any action. In 2024, he increased his playing time again, to 148 games and 461 at-bats, both personal highs, but his production was still sub-standard, with a batting average of .219, 13 homers and 61 RBIs, for an OPS+ of 83. He again saw only limited action in the postseason, going 0 for 2 as the Astros were swept in two games by the Detroit Tigers in the Wild Card Series.
There were big changes to the composition of the Astros' outfield before the 2025 season, with the decision to trade RF Kyle Tucker before he could become a free agent, and to move 2B José Altuve to left field. With rookie Cam Smith, acquired in return for Tucker, winning the starting spot in right in spring training, that left Meyers and McCormick competing for playing time in center. However, Jake got most of the playing time in the early going, largely thanks to his glove - he had been a Gold Glove finalist in centerfield the year before. On May 3rd, he had a career game against the White Sox. Batting ninth, he homered twice, tripled and doubled to tie the franchise record with 13 total bases, and also drove in a personal best 7 runs in an 8-3 win. He fell one short of Jackie Bradley Jr.'s all-time record for total bases out of the 9th spot, accomplished in 2015.
Notable Achievements[edit]
- Won one World Series with the Houston Astros in 2022 (he did not play in the World Series)
