Starting pitcher Jake Laber pitched in the independent ranks from 2008 to 2014, for the River City Rascals (2008 & 2009) and the Fargo-Moorhead Redhawks (2008 & 2010-2014). He won 10+ games three times. He did it first in 2010, when he went 11-4 with a 3.90 ERA in 21 games (19 starts), then did it again in 2011, going 10-7 with a 3.55 ERA in 23 games (21 starts). He did it the final time in 2013, going 10-5 with a 3.82 ERA in 20 starts. In 2009, he tied Dustin Pease, Bernard Robert and Ross Stout for second in the Frontier League in starts (21), behind Everett Saul's 22. In 2010, he tied Willie Glen, Andy Cruse and Cody McAllister for the Northern League lead in victories. He tied multiple pitchers for second in the league in complete games with 3, behind Ryan Bicondoa's 6. In 2011, he tied multiple pitchers for second in the American Association in starts (21), behind Scott Shaw's 23. In 2014, he tied Taylor Stanton for the AA lead in losses with 11.

Overall, Laber went 59-43 with a 4.07 ERA in 144 games (134 starts). In 846 1/3 innings, he allowed 919 hits an 215 walks (1.458 WHIP), while striking out 577 batters. He died at 30 years old on August 14, 2016 from cancer.
