Hugh Franklin Stephens

Biographical Information[edit]

Hugh Stephens was a longtime college coach.

Stephens played two years of basketball and four years of baseball at Randolph-Macon College graduating in 1941. He was a 2-time captain, and recorded a 20-9 record as a pitcher. He then became Athletic Director at Henry Clay High School in Ashland. He served in the Air Force from 1942 to 1946, then returned to Henry Clay. In 1948 he was hired as graduate manager of athletics at Randolph Macon, serving as business manager and assisting in all sports. The following year Stephens was named Athletic Director and basketball coach. He was baseball coach at Randolph Macon from 1950 until his retirement in 1982. The Yellow Jackets had 32 winning seasons in 33 years under Stephens, winning the Mason-Dixon Conference title six times and the Old Dominion Athletic Conference title twice.

Stephens served as ODAC president from 1978-80 and was two-time president of Mason-Dixon Conference. He is a member of three Halls of Fame: RMC Athletics Hall of Fame (1996), Virginia Sports Hall of Fame (1988), and ODAC Hall of Fame (2025). Randolph Macon named the baseball field in his honor - Hugh Stephens Field at Estes Park.
