Biographical Information

Long identified as simply J. O'Neill, Hugh O'Neill's first name was found in archived issues of the New York Mercury in 2008. Little else is known about this pitcher who played in 5 games for the 1875 Brooklyn Atlantics of the National Association. In 2017, his birthday was found among those of a list of players published by the Topeka Commonwealth newspaper, although that date was likely inaccurate. Researcher Justin McKinney was able to go further by locating his family in the 1880 census, which led to his uncovering a death certificate.

His last name is also spelled "O'Neil" in some sources.
