Biographical Information[edit]

Hugh Delmore played one season of minor league baseball with the Albany Senators in the New York State League in 1890. Born in Brooklyn, he played and umpired in St. Paul, MN in 1885[1], before returning east to play in Troy, NY in 1886[2]. Over the next several years, he was back in the New York City area, playing with teams such as the Atlas club in 1888[3], the Clintons of Harlem in 1889[4], and Flushing, NY in 1891[5].

Previously a pitcher, by 1890 he was primarily an infielder, when he began the year playing with the Metropolitans of New York, a semi-pro team that had ties to the earlier American Association team of the same name. That July, Metropolitans manager William Primrose took over as manager of the Albany club, brining several Mets with him, with Delmore being named captain of his new team[6]. By August, Delmore's work proved to be "unsatisfactory"[7] and he was released, returning to the Mets for the rest of the season.

In 1892 Delmore was playing for the Monitors in Wappingers Falls, NY, when it was reported that he suddenly left town, taking the diamond ring of a fellow boarding house resident with him[8]. No records of Delmore's whereabouts are then known until he appeared as a resident of Detroit in the 1920 census. He remained in Detroit until his death in 1943.
