Biographical Information[edit]
Harry Jacoby played twice in the majors, in 1882 and 1885. He also played several years in the minors.
"Harry Jacoby will not be released, so the grumblers may rest easy. Jacoby is a good utility man, as was proven last season." - Sporting Life issue of February 2, 1887
Jacoby's participation is listed on the 1890 Lebanon team with a question mark. A reference to strange events with the team mentions a Henry rather than a Harry Jacoby:
"Whoever is running the Lebanons seems possessed of a very changeable disposition. Only a couple weeks ago Manager Rigby was dropped, and pitcher Ed Knouff (was) made manager and infielder Jacoby (made) captain. . . the announcement was suddenly made on Saturday that Manager Knouff had been released, and Detective J.H. Randall . . . had been given the management. Mr. Randall . . . at once released August Moran, centre fielder and leading base-stealer of the Interstate League; Henry Jacoby, second baseman, and Oscar Foster, right fielder." - Sporting Life, July 12, 1890; both Moran and Foster played pro ball for years after that
For decades, there was no known birth date for Jacoby. This was remedied in 2022 by SABR researcher Paul Winter who found a photo of his headstone. The date was then confirmed by an entry in the 1900 Census.
