George Goodhart (manager)

George W. Goodhart

Biographical Information[edit]

George Goodhart was a Lancaster, PA native, who worked in the theater and circus business and played some with the Lancaster Active club in the 1880s, taking over the management of the team in 1889[1]. He continued to manage the club in 1890, when it was admitted to the Eastern Interstate League[2]. The team performed poorly, disbanding in late-May after going 1-19 in league games. Interestingly, the team's catcher was George E. Goodhart, of Reading, PA, who was seemingly of no relation to his manager[3]. Manager Goodhart's younger brother, Tom Goodhart, also played on the team as an outfielder and catcher[4].

Goodhart re-formed the Actives later in the season as an independent amateur team[5]. In 1891, he attempted to put together a league team in Williamsport, PA[6], but that effort came to naught. Afterwards, Goodhart focused on his work in show business, where he became well-known. He died after being hit by a car in 1932[7].
