Biographical Information[edit]

Gene Dotson played in the minor leagues and in Nippon Pro Baseball.

Dotson attended The Citadel, playing quarterback on the football team in addition to baseball. He began his professional career in the St. Louis Cardinals organization in 1976, hitting .287/.415/.455 in 35 games for the GCL Cardinals. He then crushed 13 homers with a .315/.444/.581 batting line for the Gastonia Cardinals in 1977, and also recorded a .250/.376/.361 batting line with the St. Petersburg Cardinals. Dotsoncollected 23 steals with a .253/.392/.413 batting line for the Arkansas Travelers in 1978, and he blasted 12 homers with a .306/.377/.488 batting line there in 1979. He hit 15 homers with a .275/.361/.481 batting line for the Travelers in 1980, but he went 2-for-33 with the AAA Springfield Redbirds. Dotson stayed in Springfield in 1981, and he blasted 14 homers with a .280/.338/.468 batting line.

The Nankai Hawks of Japan signed him, but he only played 47 games with a .236/.311/.405 batting line in 1982. Dotson returned to the U.S and hit .246/.349/.410 for the AAA Louisville Redbirds in 1983, after which he announced his retirement.

Overall, Dotson hit .275/.375/.456 with 652 hits and 74 homers in 7 seasons in the minor leagues.
