Biographical Information[edit]

Catcher Garett Teel played in the minor leagues from 1989 to 1994 after being drafted by the Los Angeles Dodgers in the 12th round of the 1989 amateur draft.

He started his pro career the year he was drafted, in 1989, with the Great Falls Dodgers of the Pioneer League and also appeared in 2 games with the Bakersfield Dodgers of the California League that season. In 39 games total, he hit just .147 with 1 homer and 5 RBIs. In 1990, he played 8 games for the Vero Beach Dodgers of the Florida State League, and another 42 for Bakersfield. While he did not have a hit in 14 at-bats in the FSL, he did better on the West Coast, batting .208 with 2 homers and 6 RBIs. In 1992, he hit .240 in just 12 games for Vero Beach.

He was out of baseball for all of 1993, but came back in 1994, again with Vero Beach, this time going 0 for 9 in 5 games. By then he was a catching coach in the Dodgers' organization and his stint that season and the next came as a short-term injury replacement at catcher, a position where it can be difficult to find a competent player on short notice. His final appearance in the pro ranks was one game in which he went 0 for 3 for Bakersfield in 1994. Overall, his minor league career resulted in a .166 average in 107 games, with 3 homers and 17 RBIs.

After his playing career, he founded the Teels Baseball and Softball Training Center in his hometown of West Paterson, NJ in 1999 and turned it into a successful ongoing venture. His brother Steve is an instructor at the center, alongside a number of former professional players. Garret's own career would have been completely forgotten were it not for his son Kyle Teel, also a catcher, who emerged in the early 2020s as one of the top collegiate hitters in the country and was drafted 14th overall in the 2023 amateur draft. Another son, pitcher Aidan Teel, was a teammate of Kyle's in the latter's final season at the University of Virginia in 2023.
