Biographical Information[edit]
Fumiya Hojoh played in Nippon Pro Baseball for 8 years.
Hojoh represented Japan in the 2012 World Junior Championship, hitting .148/.333/.148 and fielding .868 at short. He tied for 4th in walks (7), was 6th with 25 assists and tied Jakub Ondráček for the most errors (5). The Hanshin Tigers selected him in the 2nd round of the 2012 NPB draft, and he spent his first three seasons almost entirely in the NPB Farm Leagues; he only got an at-bat for the big club. He also represented Japan in the 2014 U-21 Baseball World Cup, batting .304/.484/.565 with 8 runs and 8 RBI in 8 games, handling 24 chances error-free at second base. He tied for 10th in runs, tied for 9th in RBI and was 10th in walks (7). Hojoh got the starting shortstop spot in the second half of the 2016 season, and he ended up hitting .273/.341/.382 with 25 doubles. He was 10th in doubles in the Central League, tied with Kosuke Fukudome and Naomichi Donoue. Hojoh slumped to .210/.286/.301 in 2017 but retained the starting spot at short as long-time shortstop Takashi Toritani moved to third base.
The Osaka native came back soon, and he recorded a .322/.370/.377 batting line in 2018 before a left shoulder injury ended his season on September 14. Had he qualified, he would've been 5th in the CL in average, between Nori Aoki and Zoilo Almonte. He then crushed 5 homers with a .247/.338/.374 batting line in 2019 as Seiya Kinami took over the starting job, but he struggled in 2020 as his batting line fell to .192/.266/.293. Hojoh went 10-for-50 in 2021, and he had a 8-for-43 record in 2022. He stayed in the minors for the entire 2023 season, and he announced his retirement.
Overall, Hojoh hit .255/.323/.350 with 308 hits and 18 homers in 8 seasons in NPB.
