First baseman Fred Koenig began his playing career in the St. Louis Cardinals organization in 1951, playing through 1961, but never made it to the majors as a player. Fred played 16 games for the Omaha Cardinals in 1959 and averaged .204. He then managed in the Cardinals' chain from 1962 to 1964. Koenig moved to the California Angels chain from 1965 to 1969. He managed 366 games in Quad Cities while there compiling a 198-168 record for a .541 winning percentage.
Koenig did make it to the big leagues as the Angels' first base coach in 1970 and 1971. Moving back to the Cards' organization, he managed in 1972, was the Director of Player Development in 1973-1974, and managed again in 1975 piloting the Gulf Coast Cardinals to a 7th-place finish with a 17-37 record. He was a member of the Cardinals big-league staff in 1976 and spent the next six seasons with the Texas Rangers. Koenig was with the Chicago Cubs in 1983 before ending his big league coaching career with the Cleveland Indians in 1986. From 1988 to 1992 he was with the Pulaski Braves, managing the club in 1989 and coaching the club the rest of the time.
