Ernie Manning played in the major leagues in 1914 with the St. Louis Browns. Although primarily a pitcher who appeared in four games with a 3.60 ERA, he also had one appearance as a third baseman, one in right field and one as a pinch-hitter.
Ernie was born in Florala, AL, in the far southern part of Alabama right next to the Florida panhandle. He attended college at Auburn University, also in Alabama, and started in the minors with the team in Montgomery, AL, where he played in 1912-1913. Mostly he was a pitcher in 1913, going 17-13. In 1914 he appeared in the majors in May and June, and also got into 20 games with the Rochester Hustlers, primarily as a pitcher. In 1915-1917 he went back to the South, playing in the Southern Association.
