Biographical Information[edit]

Outfielder Elijah Green is the son of former NFL Pro Bowl tight end Eric Green. He was considered the #3 prospect heading in the 2022 amateur draft, but fell to the 5th overall pick when the Texas Rangers threw a figurative curve ball by taking P Kumar Rocker, who had failed to come to an agreement with his drafting team the year before, with the third pick. The Washington Nationals were very happy to have the superlative athlete fall into their lap as a result. He was considered to have perhaps the highest ceiling of any player in that draft, combining tremendous power with outstanding speed, and he said that he modeled himself on Aaron Judge and Mike Trout. He was drafted out of IMG Academy in Bradenton, FL and gave up a commitment to attend the University of Miami in order to sign with Washington.

In his first pro season in 2022, he batted .302 in 12 games for the FCL Nationals. However, he had a tougher time of it when he started playing full season ball in 2023, combining to hit .218/.336/.327 in 83 games between the FCL Nationals (on a rehabilitation assignment) and the Fredericksburg Nationals of the Carolina League. The vaunted power did not show up as he hit just 5 homers, but he did steal 31 bases in 36 attempts. Making contact was a challenge as he struck out 150 times in 303 at-bats. In 2024, he repeated the level at Fredericksburg, but with similar results: his slash line was .208/.293/.355 in 106 games. He did show more power with 14 homers, and the speed was still there as he scored 74 runs and stole 39 bases, getting caught just 3 times, but the swing-and-miss issues remained too prevalent, as he struck out 206 times in 414 at-bats.

He shares a name with Elijah "Pumpsie" Green, the player who (finally) broke the color line for the Boston Red Sox in 1959 and who is sometimes referred to by his formal birth name.
