Biographical Information[edit]
Eiji Katayama played in Nippon Pro Baseball for 7 years.
Katayama was one of the few NPB players who didn't go to high school, and he joined the All-Shizuoka team of the industrial league instead. He signed with the Dai Tokyo club in 1936, and he went 7-for-28 in the spring season. He hit .158/.200/.197 in 28 games in the fall season, and he enlisted into the military so he missed the next six seasons. Katayama returned with the Yamato club as a pitcher, and he went 12-19 with a 2.17 ERA. He was 10th in ERA in the Japanese Professional Baseball League (between Toshihide Hatafuku and Fumio Maruyama), 8th in wins (tied with Masaaki Noguchi) and 3rd in losses (between Maruyama and Michio Shigematsu). Katayama didn't return to the league after the World War II, and he played with Hall of Famer Hisanori Karita for the Isuzu Motor team.
