Biographical Information[edit]

Edwin Whitnel was a first baseman who played in the minor leagues from 1922 to 1930. His professional career began with the Fulton Railroaders in 1922. He split the 1923 season between the Joplin Miners and Daytona Beach Islanders, then returned with the St. Augustine Saints in 1926 and the St. Augustine /Waycross Saints in 1927. Whitnell later played for the Kinston Eagles, Fayetteville Highlanders, and Vicksburg Hill Billies.

Whitnell attended Centre College. At John B. Stetson University, he coached the baseball team in 1923, 1924, and 1925, compiling a 9–15 record over 24 games.[1][2] Whitnell was born in Martin, TN on January 9, 1900[3], and died in St. Petersburg, FL on May 21, 1993.

Edwin spelled his name Whitnel, with a single 'L', rather than Whitnell with two 'Ls', as printed and signed on his World War II draft registration card.[3]
