Biographical Information[edit]

Catcher Eduardo Valencia was signed by the Detroit Tigers as an international amateur free agent out of Venezuela on April 24, 2018. It took him nine years and eight seasons in the minors to make his debut with the Tigers in 2026, and he made the occasion a memorable one.

He was signed more for organizational depth then because he was a top prospect, and his journey through the minors reflected that fact. He played for the DSL Tigers 1 in 2018, hitting .313 in 57 games, then played for two different Tigers affiliates in the Gulf Coast League in 2019. That turned out to be the final season in that circuit's history, as the COVID-19 pandemic shut down the minor leagues in 2020, and a Minor League Reorganization followed in 2021, abolishing a number of lower-classification league. When minor league play resumed, he was in the Florida Complex League, which had replaced the defunct GCL, and again played for two different teams at that level, in addition to a few games with the Lakeland Flying Tigers and the West Michigan Whitecaps. Such is the life of an organizational soldier. He hit .288 in 45 games between the four stops that year. He continued to move around regularly in 2022, with stops at three different levels, including one game in AA with the Erie Sea Wolves of the Eastern League, for a total of 56 games.

His career almost ended in 2023 when he had to undergo Tommy John surgery, limiting him to just 8 games for the Class A West Michigan. He then had to go back to the bottom of the ladder in 2024, starting back in the Florida Complex League before finishing the year at Lakeland. He hit .241 in 62 games, but his career appeared stalled. However, he caught a break in 2024 when he was assigned to Erie to start the year and had an excellent year with the bat, batting .304 with 11 homers and 40 RBIs in 53 games. He was named the Eastern League Player of the Week for the week of June 8th, his first time receiving any sort of recognition from MiLB. He earned a promotion to AAA on July 7th, joining the Toledo Mud Hens. He continued to hit well there, and at the end of the season his slash line was .311/.382/.559 in 103 games with 24 homers and 95 RBIs. He may not have been considered a prospect before, but he sure was hitting like one, and getting a lot of time at DH when he wasn't catching. He was added to Detroit's 40-man roster after the season.

He started 2026 in Toledo where he continued to hit well, as he was at .267 with 16 homers and 49 RBIs after 76 games. He received the call to the Show on July 9th and made his debut that same day, pinch-hitting for DH Kerry Carpenter in the 7th inning and promptly homered off Hogan Harris of The Athletics for a fairy start to his big league career. A lot of current members of the Tigers had been his teammates in the minor leagues over the years, starting with Carpenter who had played with him in the GCL in 2019 all the way to veteran P Justin Verlander who had pitched to him on a rehabilitation assignment in Toledo earlier that year, and they all were elated for the success of a teammate and friend who had demonstrated such perseverance. He was the 10th player in Tigers history to homer in his major league debut, and the first since Akil Baddoo in 2021.
