The son of David González Sr., brother of Adrian Gonzalez and David González Jr., infielder Edgar Gonzalez was selected by the Tampa Bay Devil Rays in the 30th round of the 2000 amateur draft. Edgar and his brother were among the Mexican-Americans playing for Mexico in the 2009 World Baseball Classic; he was 3 for 11 with two steals, two runs and 3 RBI while splitting second base duties with Freddy Sandoval. He struggled defensively, making at least two run-scoring errors in three games. Gonzalez also played for Mexico in the 2013 World Baseball Classic, going 2 for 10 with a walk and 6 strikeouts; he played error-free defense as their main left fielder.

Signing with the Yomiuri Giants for 2010, he went 1 for 3 with a walk in his Nippon Pro Baseball debut, playing second and hitting sixth on Opening Day.

Gonzalez turned to coaching baseball after his playing career ended. He managed Águilas de Mexicali in 2015/2016. The next season he took over as skipper of Charros de Jalisco on December 13th for the remainder of the season. Gonzalez managed Mexico in the 2017 World Baseball Classic Qualifiers, helping them win a spot in the 2017 World Baseball Classic. He remained their manager for the Classic. In his final season as a manager, Gonzalez led the GCL Yankees East squad in 2018.

Gonzalez moved away from the field in 2019 when he led the The Office of the President of Mexico for Baseball Development. During the year, Gonzalez also worked as an analyst for FOX Deportes during the MLB All-Star game and the 2019 World Series. He joined FOX Deportes in 2020 on a full-time basis and remained there as of 2026.
