Biographical Information[edit]

Ed Kusel, from Cleveland, OH, went 22-7 for Saginaw of the Southern Michigan League in 1909, earning a callup to the St. Louis Browns at the end of that season. In his first game, Kusel allowed 16 runs to the Washington Senators, second most in a career debut to the 24 runs allowed by Allan Travers when Travers was pressed into service as one of a team of emergency replacements for the striking players of the Detroit Tigers in 1912. So, among "legitimate" professional ballplayers, Kusel holds the modern era record for most runs allowed in a career debut game.

Kusel pitched three games that 1909 season, all complete game losses. He walked just one of the 113 batters he faced over those games, the fewest career walks for any pitcher with 18 or more IP or 70 or more batters faced.
