Biographical Information[edit]
Doc Mathis was a left-handed hitting outfielder who played minor league baseball and later became a college coach. He starred in football, basketball, and baseball at Davidson College, began his coaching career at Kinston High School, and later served at East Carolina Teachers College.[1]
In 1935, Mathis was the baseball coach at East Carolina Teachers College and also played on the 1935 Angier, NC semi-pro club in the Tobacco State League that included Bill Holland, and recruited him to East Carolina. Holland later pitched for the Washington Senators.[2] He also coached East Carolina's football team in 1934 and 1935, compiling records of 1-4-1 and 3-3.[3]
Mathis later coached at Elon College, where former players honored him in 1979 after earlier success as the school's baseball and basketball coach. The college credited him with a 46-19 record as baseball coach and a conference title in 1954.[4] A Chicago Cubs media guide later listed him on the club's scouting staff from Snow Camp, NC.[5]
