Biographical Information

Dick Hughes had a very brief career in the major leagues. He made his debut with the St. Louis Cardinals in September of 1966 going 2-1 with a 1.71 ERA in 6 games concluding with a complete game shutout victory. This paved the way for a sensational rookie season in 1967 when he went 16-6 with a 2.67 ERA and 161 Ks. In the National League that year he was 5th in wins, 2nd in winning percentage, 7th in ERA and led the NL in fewest hits per innings pitched. He started two of the World Series games for the Cardinals against the Boston Red Sox that year. Sadly in the spring of 1968 he tore his rotator cuff. He pitched sparingly that year, going 2-2 with a 3.53 ERA. He never again pitched in the majors and retired after pitching in the minors in 1969.

In 1962 with the Tulsa Oilers (AA), he had 33 at-bats and slugged .758.
