Biographical Information[edit]

David Wright was a right-handed minor league relief pitcher who played for the Paintsville Highlanders in 1978 and the Bakersfield Outlaws in 1979. A native of Asheville, NC[1], he pitched at A.C. Reynolds High School and Montreat-Anderson College before continuing at Austin Peay State University. Wright went 6–1 with a 1.25 ERA for Montreat-Anderson in 1976[2]. After a 5–3 season at Austin Peay State, he was named to the Tennessee All-State college team[2]. He also was named All-Ohio Valley Conference in 1978[1].

Wright moved from starting pitcher to reliever with Paintsville and went 3–1 with five saves, tying Martin Little for 6th in the Appalachian League. He left Asheville in March 1979 for spring training in Bakersfield, CA, where he pitched in the California League for the Bakersfield Outlaws[2].

Wright later worked as an assistant baseball coach at Montreat-Anderson during the 1979 and 1980 seasons[1]. He served as a graduate assistant at Western Carolina University under Bill Haywood and was named interim head baseball coach for the 1982 season after Haywood resigned[1]. At the time, Wright was working toward a graduate degree in Western Carolina's School of Education and Psychology[1].
