Chiono was 10-2 with a 2.92 ERA as a freshman at Yuba College in 1980. He was picked by the Atlanta Braves in the second round of the January 1980 draft, then went to the Pittsburgh Pirates in the first round of the secondary June 1980 draft, but did not sign either time. After college, he pitched for Italy's Castenaso club, going 4-7 with a 3.72 ERA in 1984. He was with the Italian squad for the 1984 Olympics, one of many Italian-Americans on the team.
