Biographical Information[edit]

Danny Godby was originally signed as an undrafted free agent by the Cincinnati Reds prior to the start of the 1968 season. He was coming out of Bowling Green University, where he also played basketball. He spent a number of years playing in the minors and ended up making his big league debut in 1974 with the St. Louis Cardinals. An outfielder, he went 2 for 13 (.154) in 13 games towards the end of the season. His minor league career lasted until 1977 and he appeared for at least a few games in AAA for 9 of his 10 professional seasons. He was a .282 hitter in 958 minor league games, but did not have much power, never hitting as many as 10 homers in a season.

After his brief professional career, he returned to his home county of Logan, WV, where he was a high school teacher and coach for many years at Chapmanville High School, his alma mater, and later the new Chapmanville Regional High School. He was also part-owner of a sporting goods store, and, after 1989, one of three elected county commissioners. As of 2016, he was serving his fourth six-year term on the commission. He decided not to run again in 2024 after suffering a stroke that impaired his ability to speak. [1]
