Connor MacDonald has played in the minors. He is the son of Ken MacDonald. [1]
He was signed by Houston Astros scouts Bobby Heck, Mike Brown and Greg Morriss in 2012. [2] He was 0 for 1 for his hometown Brisbane Bandits in the 2012-2013 Australian Baseball League. In the 2013 U-18 Baseball World Cup, he was 4 for 21 with 3 RBI, handling 55 chances error-free at first. [3] He was 2 foe 19 with a walk, run and RBI for Brisbane in 2013-2014.
Making his minor league debut, he hit .328/.442/.461 for the 2014 DSL Astros Blue. He hit .200/.333/.200 in the 2014 U-21 Baseball World Cup. [4] In 2014-2015, he was 1 for 7 with a homer for the Bandits. Coming stateside in 2015, he slumped to .208/.311/.286 for the GCL Astros; with his big strike zone, he had 65 K in 154 AB. He batted .156/.264/.267 for Brisbane in 2015-2016. He slashed .286/.432/.657 with 4 homers for Australia in the 2016 U-23 Baseball World Cup, tying for second in RBI (14) while tying Yusuke Masago for the home run lead. He was named the All-Star first baseman. [5]
MacDonald hit .267/.340/.360 for Brisbane in the 2016-2017 ABL, playing the corner outfield instead of first base. He eked out a .182/.247/.351 line with 35 K in 77 AB for the 2017 Tri-City ValleyCats (back at 1B) and finished his time in the 'Stros chain. He had a big winter for the Sydney Blue Sox at .277/.344/.555 with 10 homers and 28 RBI in 37 games, though he struck out in 59 of 137 AB. He handled 258 chances error-free at first and even pitched two shutout innings. He tied Chih-Hsien Chiang and Michael Reed for 9th in the 2017-2018 ABL in dingers, though he led in strikeouts at the plate. He did not play the next summer. In the 2019-2020 ABL, he hit .171/.216/.232 for Sydney with 37 strikeouts in 82 at-bats then was 2-for-16 (with 4 walks, a double and a homer) for them in 2020-2021; he allowed 3 runs in 2 innings and was 0-1.
During the 2023-2024, he was 6 for 21 with two walks, two doubles and two homers in a return to Brisbane but was now primarily a pitcher, going 1-2 with a 4.91 ERA in ten starts. He had a 5-2, 2.68 record in 2024-2025, finishing one win behind co-leaders James Bradwell and Alex Wells. He fell to 1-2, 6.23 in 2025-2026, though he struck out 47, third in the loop behind Jack O'Loughlin and Landen Bourassa. He then made the Australian national team roster for the 2026 World Baseball Classic. [6]
