Biographical Information[edit]
Clyde Manion was a catcher who played 13 years in the major leagues. He was not much of a hitter, with a .218 career average, and oddly enough, he batted better at the start of his career than in the middle or end of it.
With a lifetime .253 slugging percentage, he had only 3 major league home runs.
Only once did he have more than 200 at-bats in a season, and that was in 1928 when he came to the St. Louis Browns. He had 2 of his career 3 home runs that season, when he had 243 at-bats.
There is some question about his place of birth. In most sources, it is listed as "Big River, MO", which is a river that flows through Jefferson County, MO, and on his Find-a-Grave page it is Jefferson City, MO, not really close to the Big River and likely a mis-transcription of Jefferson Cty. On his World War II draft registration card, he gives his place of birth as De Soto, MO, which is near the Big River, and that's as close to from the horse's mouth as one is going to get.
