Biographical Information[edit]

Claude Smith Jr. played one season in professional baseball in 1974 with the GCL Pirates after the Pittsburgh Pirates selected him in the 15th round of the June amateur draft out of Mercer University. The son of Claude Smith Sr., Mercer baseball coach from 1943 to 1977, he grew up on the Mercer campus, graduated from Lanier High School (Macon) in 1970, and earned a bachelor's degree from Mercer University in 1974.[1]

After his season with the GCL Pirates, Smith returned to Mercer University and served as assistant vice president of admissions from 1975 to 1979.[1] He graduated from Mercer University's law school in 1982 and began a legal career in Boone, NC.[1] In 1996, he returned to Mercer as Director of Planned Giving.[1]
