Biographical Information[edit]

Clarence Beers pitched in one game in the majors, allowing four runs (one earned) in one third of an inning with the St. Louis Cardinals in 1948. He enjoyed a long minor league pitching career; a peak in the minors was 1947, when he was 25-8 for the Houston Buffaloes and was named the Pitcher of the Year in the AA Texas League. Al Papai was also on the Houston team, going 21-10, and Papai also came up to the majors in 1948. Beers played service ball in the San Antonio Service Baseball League in 1945 while stationed at Kelly Field. Paul Chervinko was on the same service team.

Baseball Digest in December 1968 told a story about how Beers was instructed to throw a pitchout with the bases empty and a 2-0 count during the 1947 Dixie Series. It was a case of mistaken communication between the manager Johnny Keane and catcher Joe Niedson and Beers dutifully followed through after making the catcher repeat it three times.

In 1948 with the Columbus Red Birds, Beers, 29, had decisions in four of six semifinal playoff games against the Milwaukee Brewers, winning two and losing two. In the finals that year against the St. Paul Saints, Beers won one and lost one. Although the Red Birds made the finals, the Saints won the championship in a vigorous seven-game series. Beers was the Red Birds' most versatile pitcher during the playoffs in 1948, acting in both a starting and relief role.
