Biographical Information

Shortstop Brendan Rodgers was selected by the Colorado Rockies with the third overall pick in the 2015 amateur draft. He was considered the top high school player in the country that year, and there was speculation that he could be taken first overall. He was the third shortstop taken with the first three picks, following college players Dansby Swanson and Alex Bregman. On June 17th, he agreed to a contract with the Rockies that included a $5.5 million bonus and was immediately assigned to the Grand Junction Rockies of the Pioneer League.

He had a very successful professional debut on June 25th, as he went 4-for-6, scored 3 runs and collected 2 RBIs in a 15-11 Grand Junction loss to the Orem Owlz; one of the hits was a homer in his first competitive game in over two months.

He was named to the United States team for the 2017 Futures Game and for the 2018 Futures Game. He made his major league debut with the Rockies on May 17, 2019. His first couple of seasons in the majors were unimpressive, as he batted .224 in 25 games in 2019, and .095 in 7 games in 2020. In 2021, he became a regular for the first time, playing 102 games, with 78 starts at second base and 18 at shortstop. He hit .284 with 15 homers and 51 RBIs, good for an OPS+ of 103. In 2022, he had a rough start, batting just .078 in April, but then settled down by batting .347 in May. On June 1st, in the second game of a doubleheader, he had the first three-homer game of his career in a wild 13-12 win over the Miami Marlins. The third one was the game winner, a two-run walk-off home run off Cole Sulser in the 10th inning; he was the first batter of the bottom of the inning, but also drove in the automatic runner who was on second base. He had never before had a multiple-homer game in the big leagues - never mind one with three homers - or hit a walk-off shot. In Rockies history, only Todd Hollandsworth in 2001 had ever capped a three-homer game with a walk-off blast. He finished the season at .266 in 137 games with 13 homers and 63 RBIs. Given the good hitting conditions at Coors Field, his OPS+ was only 96. However, he did win a Gold Glove as the best-fielding second baseman in the National League.

His 2023 season took a bad when he injured his shoulder while diving for a ground ball during a Cactus League game on February 28th. There was significant damage and it was likely that he would need to undergo surgery, threatening to cost him a full season of action.
