Brad Garnett was a first-round pick in the 1978 amateur draft who spent his whole career in A ball. The Pittsburgh Pirates chose Garnett 19th overall, one pick before a pitcher from the Pittsburgh area (Tim Conroy) was selected. Garnett hit .196/.265/.367 in his pro debut for the 1979 Shelby Pirates, with 103 strikeouts to 29 walks in 311 AB. He did show power, with 13 home runs and 44 RBI. A second negative was his poor defense - he led Western Carolinas League outfielders with 16 errors, fielding only .888 there.
Moved to first base in 1980, Garnett improved to .231/.347/.401 for Shelby. He hit 11 home runs in 294 AB but struck out 104 times. His 17 errors were one shy of leading South Atlantic League first basemen. He split 1981 between the Greenwood Pirates (.205/.299/.370, 58 K in 146 AB) and Alexandria Dukes (.175/.267/.275, 18 K in 40 AB). He ended his career with Alexandria in 1982, hitting .210/.319/.353 with 10 homers in 309 AB but 87 strikeouts.
