Biographical Information[edit]

Reliever Bobby Ayala was somewhat of a lightning rod for the Seattle Mariners bullpen woes in the mid 1990s. He had good stuff (forkball, slider, low-90s fastball), but the perception was that he did not do well in pressure situations. After a horrid 1998 season, a change of scenery was necessary and he was traded to the Montreal Expos for minor leaguer Jimmy Turman after spring training, 1999. It seemed to do the trick, as he posted a 3.51 ERA that season, which wound up being his last.

He spent the 2000 season in the Chicago Cubs and Los Angeles Dodgers systems and hung up his spikes afterwards.

He was the inspiration for one of the oddest promotions. On June 28, 1995, the M's held Bobby Ayala Goatee Night.
