Biographical Information[edit]
Bo Hughes, known as Bill Hughes through the 1990s, was taken by the Minnesota Twins in the 32nd round of the 1974 amateur draft as a high school shortstop. He opted to play college baseball at the University of La Verne, making two appearances in the NAIA College World Series. Hughes played two summers for the Hutchinson Broncos of the Jayhawk League in 1977-1978, then stayed with the Broncs in 1979 as a promotions man after graduating from college.
In 1980, Hughes took the job as head coach at Hutchinson Community College (1980-1983) and also stayed with the Broncs as a coach (1980-1983). In 1984, Hughes joined the Cal State Fullerton Titans as an assistant coach (1984-1986). In 1985 and 1986, Hughes was the head coach of the summer collegiate Humboldt Crabs.
In 1987, Hughes took a job as an assistant coach for the USC Trojans (1987-1991) and started to work as the National Assistant Director of the MLB Scouting Bureau.
Hughes has worked as a scout for multiple MLB teams since 1995, including the Colorado Rockies (1995-2003), Cleveland Indians (2013-2021), and Los Angeles Angels (2004-2012, 2022-present). Hughes received an MLB Lifetime Achievement Award in 2018.
Hughes was also a technical advisor for multiple baseball films including A League of Their Own (1992), The Fan (1996), and Summer Catch (2001).
As a scout, Hughes signed Garrett Atkins and Miguel Gonzalez.
