Biographical Information[edit]

William J. "Bill" Smith played and managed in the National Association in 1873 with the hapless Baltimore Marylands who played only six games, losing them all by lopsided scores, before they folded as a team. He played 3 games as an outfielder, 2 at catcher, and 1 at second base in addition to managing the team.

He was the brother of John Smith, who also played on the team. The two were local players from Baltimore, MD who had played for the amateur Swann club. Their father, William J. Smith, represented the Marylands at the National Association convention in both 1873 and 1874. In addition to his brother and father being involved in the game, Bill was the father of Harry Smith, who was a catcher in the 1910s.
