William Michael Campbell

After serving in the United States Navy during World War I, he played football at the University of Mississippi but broke his leg in 1920, ending any hope of a career as an athlete. He began umpiring in the Appalachian League in 1921, then moved to the Southern Association midway through the 1922 season. He was back in the Appalachian League in 1923, then in the Southern Association from 1924 to 1927. After his stint in the American League, he was back in the SA again from 1932 to 1935, then worked in the International League from June of 1935 until 1938. He integrated National League ranks in September of 1938.
