Outfielder Anthony Latham was selected by the Boston Red Sox in the fourth round of the 1983 amateur draft and made his pro debut that summer with the Winston-Salem Red Sox that summer, hitting .275 with 2 home runs in 40 games. Following the season, while on a fishing trip with teammates John Mitchell and Scott Skripko, the boat on which he was riding sank. Latham could not swim and died; Mitchell and Skripko were rescued after more than 20 hours at sea.
